Children’s Pants from EM Patterns

{a Canadian Pattern Designer Blog Tour}

It’s warm weather here and kids need shorts.  I used the Canadian Pattern Designer Blog Tour as an opportunity to stitch up some new shorts.  These are the Children’s Pants No. 2 (cut off into shorts) from E+M Patterns.  One pair is for my 5 year old daughter, and the other pair for her 7 year old friend.  This way, I could make shorts for a girl and for a boy using the same pattern just by changing up the pockets.

There are so many great independent patterns available to us.  We are lucky to have all these options with designers from all over the world.  Many more options than our Moms and Grandmothers had when they were sewing for us.  And we have the convenience of purchasing and printing at home.  We can be cutting and sewing from a new pattern designed by someone a thousand miles away within 15 minutes.  This blog tour celebrates the creativity from the pattern designers in Canada.

Thank you Ula from Lulu & Celeste for organizing such a large and fabulous blog tour!  And so many great sponsors!!!  AND for a chance to win a Grand Prize, LINK UP your creations by the featured designers HERE.

The girl’s shorts have ruffled pockets on the front and super-cute puffy pockets on the back.  For my daughter, I made the shorts in size 6, but reduced the length by 1″ to hem them just above her knees.  The fabric is Riley Blake Country Girl collection purchased from Whimsical Fabric Shop on one of their Wacky Wednesday deals.

The boy’s shorts are in a nice navy twill by Fabric Finders, also from Whimsical Fabrics.  They have pleated pockets on the back and plain hip pockets on the front.  Again, I shortened the length to make the hem fall just above the knee on these size 7 shorts.  I top stitched the shorts in a green thread to match the girl’s outfit.  Our friend shows off his new hat with the shorts -he tolerates the photo shoot so he can take new clothes from Ms. Stacey home with him.  This kiddo is such a sweetheart!

The E+M Children’s Pants PDF pattern comes in sizes 2-10.  It is a pants pattern but has cutting lines for both girls and boys shorts.  The shorts are a slim fit with an elastic waistband in the back and a flat waist band in the front.  AND – it has the nicest finishing features!  All of the seams are finished with french seams, including the front pockets.

The tops for the kids are from Gracious Threads, another Canadian Pattern Designer — more on the tops later…..

My favorite part of a photo shoot is when I have the pictures that I need to show off the clothes and the kids can just have fun….. and look at all the fun between these 2 kiddos!

  1. Those boy shorts look amazing. My son would love them, I’ll have to add that to my ever-growing sewing to do list 🙂
