Easter Dresses in Voile

Voile Fabric… wondering what it is?  wondering what to do with it?  wondering if you should try it?  or, maybe, you have tried it, you know what to do with it, and you are wondering what your next project with voile fabric should be.

I am here to share with you my project in voile fabric and to inspire you to make something in voile fabric of your own.

Using voile fabric and a PDF pattern from Whimsical Fabric online store, I made this darling dress for my 6 1/2 year old daughter.

This is her Easter dress.

The voile fabric is Kladi Under Shadow from the Skopelos collection by Art Gallery – HERE in the Whimsical Fabric store.  The pettiskirt is Pure Elements in Fuschia also from Whimsical Fabric and cotton candy pink netting from my local shop.  The PDF Pattern is the Bateau Garden Dress designed by Winter Wear, yes, also available at Whimsical Fabric.

* the fabric was purchased by me with a discount, and the pattern was provided to me in exchange for the stitch up and the write up *

The BEST part of the project is the super-yummy voile fabric from Whimsical Fabric, and the oh-so-fluffy pettiskirt under the dress designed by Winter Wear Designs.

So let’s talk about voile fabrics.

I don’t want to disappoint you, but other than the most luxurious, buttery-softest, and most lovely fabric you have ever worked with, sewing with voile is no different than sewing with good quilting cotton.  I suggest using a very sharp microtex needle, and setting your tension to work with lighter weight fabrics – but otherwise, I worked with voile fabric just like I work with other cottons.

The big difference is the wearability!  Just like flannel fabric is super cozy for pajamas or for blankets – voile is so-very comfortable for garments.  Especially for a draping shirt or a flowing skirt, and especially for this Easter Dress for my girl.  The soft circle skirt with the fluffy skirt underneath works perfectly in voile fabric.

As for care of voile fabric- there are no special considerations.  I prewashed the fabric and lost little yardage due to shrinkage (remember, this is from Art Gallery, so it’s the good stuff).  I used my usual DRY & HOT setting on the iron.  I sprayed water for pressing and setting the seams.  At completion, I used Best Press spray.  After sewing, I washed and dried this dress, pressed it, and this is how it looks… pretty good, yes?!

My daughter’s Easter dress is made from the Bateau Garden Dress PDF Pattern designed by Winter Wear Designs.  It is the scoop back dress cut at the size 7 vintage length with the tulle pettiskirt.  The pettiskirt is gathered tightly under the waist of the dress to add some poof.  Because the voile fabrics are softer and thiner than other cottons, the gathers make up beautifully!  Honestly, I think these are some of my most perfect gathers simply because the fabric is so supple.  The neckline is understitched and the circle skirt is hemmed with the 3/8″ bias made from the fuschia solid fabric.  The bodice is completely lined, and the skirt seams are finished with a serger.
