It’s a PJ Party!

{Pajamas in the Laboratory}

What’s the perfect (and possibly the only) garment to sew for a preteen boy that he will actually wear???  PAJAMAS shorts!  especially pajamas shorts in awesome fabrics.

For my stop on the Spring Break Pajamas Party Blog Tour, I wanted to sew for my son.  He is 11 years old, and doesn’t get many opportunities to model handmade clothes sewn by his Mom.  The PJ’s party was the perfect opportunity.

But then the Sew Your Stash Challenge for March was added.  The theme this month is ‘Dolls, Plushies, and Toys’.  eek… now what?  How do I make PJs for my preteen son having to do with toys???  AND use fabric and patterns from my stash?  I came up with the pajamas shorts with a science laboratory twist.  And I think if you stretch you imagination with me, I met the challenge 🙂

This is Pajamas in the Laboratory!

I used my favorite pajamas pants pattern, Simplicity 1605.  I made boys size Large, but only used a 1/4″ seam allowance because he is between the boys and the mens sizes.  Instead of a casing for the elastic, I used my serger to overlock stitch the elastic to the top of the shorts, and then folded over and used my sewing machine with a narrow zigzag.  This makes a nice waistband that doesn’t roll or shift.

From my stash, I had this Micheal Miller Science Fair fabric collection.  It was planned to be PJ’s or maybe a blanket/quilt or maybe bags someday.  It was always intended to be for my son.  Now I know that I bought it for this Pajamas Party Blog Tour!  It fit the theme of ‘toys’ for an 11 year old boy.  And since growing 2 inches and gaining 8 pounds in the last 3 months, he needed new PJ shorts. I made a pair of shorts from each of the 3 fabrics in my stash, and top stitched in coordinating threads.

BUT my favorite part of this project, was the photo shoot… creating the scenes of science with his toys was a lot of fun!

This is the molecule fabric, so he works with his microscope and looks up information on his computer.

This is the chemistry fabric, so he mixes his solutions to make slime, smoke, and bubbling goo, while wearing safety goggles of course.

This is the physics fabric, so he builds his Legos – and the Newton Apple was a last minute add from his Dad.

My son’s favorite moment was when Zazzles the cat made the photo shoot too.
