Sofilantjes 2nd Anniversary Celebration!

Have you been following the anniversary celebration at Sofilantjes?  It’s the designer’s 2nd Anniversary, and it’s been a spectacular blog tour and week of games, pattern discounts (25% off your purchase (bundles excluded) with code CELEBRATE), give aways, & so much inspiration to create.  Her sponsors for the celebration are some of the best in the business – much THANKS to them for making this possible.

For the blog tour, Anne challenged her bloggers to mash, twist, extend, and transform her patterns.  She told us to use any of her patterns, even several of her patterns at once, to make our most creative garment possible… and we DID deliver!

These are the highlights and my personal FAVEs…

Pockets! Pockets! and more Pockets!

There were extra pockets, cargo pockets, inseam pockets, and kangaroo pockets shared on the tour.

For me, one of the most UNIQUE transformations for the newest pattern, the Solis Tunic and Dress is Braided Straps… I am trying this trick, for sure!

Another unique mash up on Sofilantjes Patterns that I have to guess surprised Anne, was the SWIMSUIT made from the Solis pattern and the free Liv Skirt pattern – so much creativity!

And then of course there were gorgeous dresses for the girlies!  with super twirly skirts, longer tunic styles, and even a super sweet peplum skirt.

Paired with the most popular Domi pants pattern, there were tutorials to mash up patterns into a ROMPER – yes! a romper.

HAPPY 2 Year ANNIVERSARY Sofilantjes!  It’s been an exciting year full of patterns, tutorials, mash-ups, hacks, and such creativeness!  I am happy to be part of the anniversary blog tour.  To celebrate the anniversary, I pulled my FAVORITE goat fabric and made a capri Domi pants with plenty of pockets for my girl.  I LOVE this fabric!  almost as much as I LOVE the Sofilantjes Domi Pants Pattern.  And then with the extra pockets… ok, yes, that’s enough gushing – let’s get to the good stuff.

The Domi Pants Pattern come with options for front pockets.  I added back and side pockets to my capri pants.  The side pockets include a velco tab closure.

Summer Solis Dress

The latest design from Sofilantjes is the Solis Dress, and it is PERFECT for summer weather.  The PDF Pattern makes a knit fabric dress (or tunic) with a racerback tank top.  It is a very unique design!  And it is easy to make if you have experience with knit fabrics – if you dont, then just take your time, and ask for help HERE.

www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress

www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress 7

The skirt can be made with pleats or as a full circle.  Just so you know, the full skirt version makes a super twirl skirt!  It can be a dress or a tunic.  And it has inseam POCKETS.  I think every garment should have pockets!

www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress

The Solis pattern is offered in sizes 12 months to 14 years.

I made a size 6 pleated dress for my girl.  It is very fitted, and fit her perfectly.  I suggest measuring your girl to get the fit right.  And be careful sizing up too much because the cut of this top needs to fit.  As with all Sofilantjes patterns, the measurements are spot on.

Another suggestion is to use knit fabric that is less than 50% stretch – really you should use about 30% stretch.  This is because of the fit and underarm cut.  You dont want this saggy.  So pick a sturdy knit fabric.  I used a tight cotton/spandex flowered knit and a cotton pink knit purchased from Jo-ann.  The pattern has the option of adding clear elastic to the neckline.  I didnt have any, and am not particularly skilled at using clear elastic, so I omitted it.  And since my outer knit fabric had good recovery to it, I didnt need it.

www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress 2www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress

The pattern meets the typical high quality expected from Sofilantjes – see my other garments HERE, HERE, and HERE.  There are line drawings, printing in layers, clear & concise instructions, measurements and fabric charts, a summary of steps at the end, and TONS of example photos from her testers.

The Solis Pattern is on sale for only 2 days… and make sure you join the Sofilantjes Sew and Show FB group to meet other Sofilantjes fans.

Little Gypsy Queen Dress for Spring

This dress is ready for Spring Twirling!

I made this dress with a full circle patchwork skirt, gathered neckline, and back bow from the PDF Pattern designed by Handmaiden’s Cottage.  It’s the Little Gypsy Queen pattern.

www.From-a-Box.com Vintage Sleep Gypsy 4

The fabric is the Dreamin’ Vintage collection by Art Gallery from Whimsical Fabric online shop.  It was their Wacky Wednesday deal in March… Join the group HERE to get the deals and join the challenges.

The fabric is SO pretty!  I love the blues, yellows, and purples.  Making the dress, I was continually reminded of the beds sheets at my Granny’s house.  Then it made sense.  The fabric collection is a retro print inspired by those bed sheets that I remember.

www.From-a-Box.com Little Gypsy Queen Dress

The dress pattern features a patchwork skirt that makes a full circle skirt, and that means plenty of twirly fun for girlie.  The waist is wrapped in a band that ties at the back in a sweet bow.  The bodice and gathered neck is made in the prettiest blue fabric of the collection.  The bodice is fully lined in a cotton white fabric and finished at the arms and the waist.   The dress fits comfy with the easy elastic around the top and the adjustable waist.  The bottom of the dress is finished with a narrow hem below the knees.

www.From-a-Box.com Vintage Sleep Gypsy 6

Besides making this dress for Whimsical Fabrics Wacky Wednesday challenge, this dress was made as my first ever garment made just for sale.  I joined the Handmaiden’s Cottage Pattern Showcase Sale hosted by Landocolors on their Facebook Page HERE.  The showcase features pattern designs from Handmaiden’s Cottage patterns.  The garments for sale on the Facebook Page range from Women’s Skirts & Aprons to Doll Dresses, and of course includes little girls and big girls Dresses, Tops and Pants.  So many beautiful clothes!  in all the Handmaiden’s Cottage Patterns.

This was my first opportunity to try out selling online, and I am so thankful for the opportunity.   But alas, my dress did not sell.  To be honest, I am disappointed, but not surprised.  However, I feel challenged now, and think I will be looking further into the online market for handmade items.  I want to try it out more.

Here is one last look at my Little Gypsy Queen Dress for Spring…

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab

It’s a PJ Party!

{Pajamas in the Laboratory}

What’s the perfect (and possibly the only) garment to sew for a preteen boy that he will actually wear???  PAJAMAS shorts!  especially pajamas shorts in awesome fabrics.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 5

For my stop on the Spring Break Pajamas Party Blog Tour, I wanted to sew for my son.  He is 11 years old, and doesn’t get many opportunities to model handmade clothes sewn by his Mom.  The PJ’s party was the perfect opportunity.

But then the Sew Your Stash Challenge for March was added.  The theme this month is ‘Dolls, Plushies, and Toys’.  eek… now what?  How do I make PJs for my preteen son having to do with toys???  AND use fabric and patterns from my stash?  I came up with the pajamas shorts with a science laboratory twist.  And I think if you stretch you imagination with me, I met the challenge 🙂

This is Pajamas in the Laboratory!

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 10

I used my favorite pajamas pants pattern, Simplicity 1605.  I made boys size Large, but only used a 1/4″ seam allowance because he is between the boys and the mens sizes.  Instead of a casing for the elastic, I used my serger to overlock stitch the elastic to the top of the shorts, and then folded over and used my sewing machine with a narrow zigzag.  This makes a nice waistband that doesn’t roll or shift.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 9

From my stash, I had this Micheal Miller Science Fair fabric collection.  It was planned to be PJ’s or maybe a blanket/quilt or maybe bags someday.  It was always intended to be for my son.  Now I know that I bought it for this Pajamas Party Blog Tour!  It fit the theme of ‘toys’ for an 11 year old boy.  And since growing 2 inches and gaining 8 pounds in the last 3 months, he needed new PJ shorts. I made a pair of shorts from each of the 3 fabrics in my stash, and top stitched in coordinating threads.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab

BUT my favorite part of this project, was the photo shoot… creating the scenes of science with his toys was a lot of fun!

This is the molecule fabric, so he works with his microscope and looks up information on his computer.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 23

This is the chemistry fabric, so he mixes his solutions to make slime, smoke, and bubbling goo, while wearing safety goggles of course.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 21

This is the physics fabric, so he builds his Legos – and the Newton Apple was a last minute add from his Dad.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 22

My son’s favorite moment was when Zazzles the cat made the photo shoot too.

Easter Dresses in Voile

Voile Fabric… wondering what it is?  wondering what to do with it?  wondering if you should try it?  or, maybe, you have tried it, you know what to do with it, and you are wondering what your next project with voile fabric should be.

I am here to share with you my project in voile fabric and to inspire you to make something in voile fabric of your own.

Using voile fabric and a PDF pattern from Whimsical Fabric online store, I made this darling dress for my 6 1/2 year old daughter.

This is her Easter dress.

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voilewww.From-a-Box.com Bateau Voile 8www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile

The voile fabric is Kladi Under Shadow from the Skopelos collection by Art Gallery – HERE in the Whimsical Fabric store.  The pettiskirt is Pure Elements in Fuschia also from Whimsical Fabric and cotton candy pink netting from my local shop.  The PDF Pattern is the Bateau Garden Dress designed by Winter Wear, yes, also available at Whimsical Fabric.

* the fabric was purchased by me with a discount, and the pattern was provided to me in exchange for the stitch up and the write up *

The BEST part of the project is the super-yummy voile fabric from Whimsical Fabric, and the oh-so-fluffy pettiskirt under the dress designed by Winter Wear Designs.

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile

So let’s talk about voile fabrics.

I don’t want to disappoint you, but other than the most luxurious, buttery-softest, and most lovely fabric you have ever worked with, sewing with voile is no different than sewing with good quilting cotton.  I suggest using a very sharp microtex needle, and setting your tension to work with lighter weight fabrics – but otherwise, I worked with voile fabric just like I work with other cottons.

The big difference is the wearability!  Just like flannel fabric is super cozy for pajamas or for blankets – voile is so-very comfortable for garments.  Especially for a draping shirt or a flowing skirt, and especially for this Easter Dress for my girl.  The soft circle skirt with the fluffy skirt underneath works perfectly in voile fabric.

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voilewww.From-a-Box.com Bateau Voile 3www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile

As for care of voile fabric- there are no special considerations.  I prewashed the fabric and lost little yardage due to shrinkage (remember, this is from Art Gallery, so it’s the good stuff).  I used my usual DRY & HOT setting on the iron.  I sprayed water for pressing and setting the seams.  At completion, I used Best Press spray.  After sewing, I washed and dried this dress, pressed it, and this is how it looks… pretty good, yes?!

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile 13

My daughter’s Easter dress is made from the Bateau Garden Dress PDF Pattern designed by Winter Wear Designs.  It is the scoop back dress cut at the size 7 vintage length with the tulle pettiskirt.  The pettiskirt is gathered tightly under the waist of the dress to add some poof.  Because the voile fabrics are softer and thiner than other cottons, the gathers make up beautifully!  Honestly, I think these are some of my most perfect gathers simply because the fabric is so supple.  The neckline is understitched and the circle skirt is hemmed with the 3/8″ bias made from the fuschia solid fabric.  The bodice is completely lined, and the skirt seams are finished with a serger.

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voilewww.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile

Again, back to the fabrics… as I said these are Art Gallery fabrics and they are some of the very best on the market (imo)… Art Gallery doesn’t disappoint in the fabric prints, colors, quality, and styles.  And as you know, I shop Whimsical Fabric online store because of their selection, customer service, fair prices, and super-quick shipping — Go shopping HERE.

The team at Whimsical Fabric is engaging, supportive, and helpful – and their Facebook Group is always busy and exciting with contests, prizes, special deals, and friendly connections — Join the group HERE.
