Back To School 2017

My FAVORITE day of the year, Back to School!  This year, I participated in the Back To School blog tour with so many fabulous sewing ladies.  After you check out my daughter’s back to school look, make sure to see the other blog tour outfits – schedule and links are below.

For my Back to School look, I used Gracious Threads patterns.  The top is the Raindrop Tee, the pants are Lazy Days Lounge Pants, and the vest is Glacier Vest.  The fabrics are white soft fuzzy fleece and raspberry ribbed knit, both from my local fabric store.  And the bright floral woven and gray owls knit fabric is from Art Gallery.  The wise owls on seemed appropriate for back to school.

and, the fluffy fleece vest is REVERSIBLE!  with a button closure on both sides.

Little Gypsy Queen Dress for Spring

This dress is ready for Spring Twirling!

I made this dress with a full circle patchwork skirt, gathered neckline, and back bow from the PDF Pattern designed by Handmaiden’s Cottage.  It’s the Little Gypsy Queen pattern.

www.From-a-Box.com Vintage Sleep Gypsy 4

The fabric is the Dreamin’ Vintage collection by Art Gallery from Whimsical Fabric online shop.  It was their Wacky Wednesday deal in March… Join the group HERE to get the deals and join the challenges.

The fabric is SO pretty!  I love the blues, yellows, and purples.  Making the dress, I was continually reminded of the beds sheets at my Granny’s house.  Then it made sense.  The fabric collection is a retro print inspired by those bed sheets that I remember.

The dress pattern features a patchwork skirt that makes a full circle skirt, and that means plenty of twirly fun for girlie.  The waist is wrapped in a band that ties at the back in a sweet bow.  The bodice and gathered neck is made in the prettiest blue fabric of the collection.  The bodice is fully lined in a cotton white fabric and finished at the arms and the waist.   The dress fits comfy with the easy elastic around the top and the adjustable waist.  The bottom of the dress is finished with a narrow hem below the knees.

Besides making this dress for Whimsical Fabrics Wacky Wednesday challenge, this dress was made as my first ever garment made just for sale.  I joined the Handmaiden’s Cottage Pattern Showcase Sale hosted by Landocolors on their Facebook Page HERE.  The showcase features pattern designs from Handmaiden’s Cottage patterns.  The garments for sale on the Facebook Page range from Women’s Skirts & Aprons to Doll Dresses, and of course includes little girls and big girls Dresses, Tops and Pants.  So many beautiful clothes!  in all the Handmaiden’s Cottage Patterns.

This was my first opportunity to try out selling online, and I am so thankful for the opportunity.   But alas, my dress did not sell.  To be honest, I am disappointed, but not surprised.  However, I feel challenged now, and think I will be looking further into the online market for handmade items.  I want to try it out more.

Here is one last look at my Little Gypsy Queen Dress for Spring…

Easter Dresses in Voile

Voile Fabric… wondering what it is?  wondering what to do with it?  wondering if you should try it?  or, maybe, you have tried it, you know what to do with it, and you are wondering what your next project with voile fabric should be.

I am here to share with you my project in voile fabric and to inspire you to make something in voile fabric of your own.

Using voile fabric and a PDF pattern from Whimsical Fabric online store, I made this darling dress for my 6 1/2 year old daughter.

This is her Easter dress.

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voilewww.From-a-Box.com Bateau Voile 8www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile

The voile fabric is Kladi Under Shadow from the Skopelos collection by Art Gallery – HERE in the Whimsical Fabric store.  The pettiskirt is Pure Elements in Fuschia also from Whimsical Fabric and cotton candy pink netting from my local shop.  The PDF Pattern is the Bateau Garden Dress designed by Winter Wear, yes, also available at Whimsical Fabric.

* the fabric was purchased by me with a discount, and the pattern was provided to me in exchange for the stitch up and the write up *

The BEST part of the project is the super-yummy voile fabric from Whimsical Fabric, and the oh-so-fluffy pettiskirt under the dress designed by Winter Wear Designs.

So let’s talk about voile fabrics.

I don’t want to disappoint you, but other than the most luxurious, buttery-softest, and most lovely fabric you have ever worked with, sewing with voile is no different than sewing with good quilting cotton.  I suggest using a very sharp microtex needle, and setting your tension to work with lighter weight fabrics – but otherwise, I worked with voile fabric just like I work with other cottons.

The big difference is the wearability!  Just like flannel fabric is super cozy for pajamas or for blankets – voile is so-very comfortable for garments.  Especially for a draping shirt or a flowing skirt, and especially for this Easter Dress for my girl.  The soft circle skirt with the fluffy skirt underneath works perfectly in voile fabric.

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voilewww.From-a-Box.com Bateau Voile 3www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile

As for care of voile fabric- there are no special considerations.  I prewashed the fabric and lost little yardage due to shrinkage (remember, this is from Art Gallery, so it’s the good stuff).  I used my usual DRY & HOT setting on the iron.  I sprayed water for pressing and setting the seams.  At completion, I used Best Press spray.  After sewing, I washed and dried this dress, pressed it, and this is how it looks… pretty good, yes?!

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile 13

My daughter’s Easter dress is made from the Bateau Garden Dress PDF Pattern designed by Winter Wear Designs.  It is the scoop back dress cut at the size 7 vintage length with the tulle pettiskirt.  The pettiskirt is gathered tightly under the waist of the dress to add some poof.  Because the voile fabrics are softer and thiner than other cottons, the gathers make up beautifully!  Honestly, I think these are some of my most perfect gathers simply because the fabric is so supple.  The neckline is understitched and the circle skirt is hemmed with the 3/8″ bias made from the fuschia solid fabric.  The bodice is completely lined, and the skirt seams are finished with a serger.

Again, back to the fabrics… as I said these are Art Gallery fabrics and they are some of the very best on the market (imo)… Art Gallery doesn’t disappoint in the fabric prints, colors, quality, and styles.  And as you know, I shop Whimsical Fabric online store because of their selection, customer service, fair prices, and super-quick shipping — Go shopping HERE.

The team at Whimsical Fabric is engaging, supportive, and helpful – and their Facebook Group is always busy and exciting with contests, prizes, special deals, and friendly connections — Join the group HERE.

Sew n’ Style: Birthday Style

When I sew, I love collections!  I love themes!  I love to make coordinates!  And I love for my girlie to be involved.  The Sew n’Style Series by Lil Luxe offers all of these loves for me.

This mini collection is to celebrate my daughter’s 6th birthday.  The collection includes her school day outfit, her party dress, and her pajamas – all from Lil Luxe patterns.  That is a complete day of outfits… a very special day of very special outfits created by me and my youngest daughter.

www.From-a-Box.com Sew n' Style: Birthday Style

(and so I don’t forget to tell you… you can create your own mini collection and link it up with  #sewNstyleluxeseries for a chance to win some fabulous prizes!  see all the details HERE)

After planning and sketching the outfits for her birthday, my daughter and I liked the Art Gallery Recollection fabric collection best, accented with gold (like a queen), and coordinated with a cheetah spotted fabric for pants.  She wanted a tiara and gold ribbons to look extra royal for her special day.  She wanted pink, but not baby pink – since she was turning 6!  I think we came up with a lovely style for her day….. It’s her Birthday Style!

First, her school day outfit for her birthday—-

This is the Rouche & Division Top pattern in Flowered Engrams Ornate voile fabric from Art Gallery’s Recollections fabric collection.  The neck and sleeves are finished with gold metallic ricrac and a raspberry cotton binding.  I slimmed the flared sides of the top by about 2 inches to take out some of the fullness.  The elbow length sleeves are rouched, and the neck line is a slight boatneck per the pattern.  These are my two favorite features of the pattern.

www.From-a-Box.com Sew n' Style: Birthday Style

The pants are the Slim Trousers pattern in a spotted stretch denim accented with metallic gold ricrac on the pockets and metallic gold zippers at the ankles.

Matched with gold shoes and gold hair ribbon, my girl is ready for her special day at school.  She received a special birthday welcome from her classmates, heard her name on the morning announcements, and got to show off in her new stylish outfit.

Next, her party dress for dinner with the family —-

www.From-a-Box.com Sew n' Style: Birthday Style

This is the Charming Tee & Dress pattern in an off-white spandex stretch knit fabric and Remembrose Doilies print fabric, and featuring a pretty white lace to coordinate with the doilies in the print fabric.  The back of the dress is cut out in the pattern.  I choose the enclose the circle with the white lace, as well as cover the front bodice in white lace.  The sleeves are cut to elbow length with gathered lace, same as the bottom hem of the dress, which is with gathered lace.

Paired with a gold tiara and flowery sandals, she was lovely for her birthday dinner.

And finally, her birthday pajamas —-

After a long day of celebrating becoming 6 years old, my daughter was slept cozy in her birthday pajamas.  This is from the Alley Cat Romper pattern, but made into pajamas.  The fabric is a raspberry knit matched to the Bullion Fronds Carnation knit fabric, again from Art Gallery.  Since this was to be pajamas, I cut the back bodice to be full coverage (without the scoop) and added buttons on a placket.  The pajamas are nice & cozy and nice & roomy for my birthday girl.

Springtime His & Hers Outfits… Ready for Easter!

My Granny would say “I didn’t know you could do that!”.  She said this when she was impressed with what you did.  It was a high compliment from her.

My last project was definitely worthy of my Granny’s “I didn’t know you could do that!”  I made coordinating fancy spring outfits for my daughter and her friend.  The boy’s trousers and vest had welt pockets!!!  I heard my Granny from heaven saying to me “I didn’t know you could do that!”….. well Granny, I didn’t know I could make welt pockets either, but I can!
