Back To School 2017

My FAVORITE day of the year, Back to School!  This year, I participated in the Back To School blog tour with so many fabulous sewing ladies.  After you check out my daughter’s back to school look, make sure to see the other blog tour outfits – schedule and links are below.

www.From-a-Box.com Back to School 2017

www.From-a-Box Back to School 2017 4

For my Back to School look, I used Gracious Threads patterns.  The top is the Raindrop Tee, the pants are Lazy Days Lounge Pants, and the vest is Glacier Vest.  The fabrics are white soft fuzzy fleece and raspberry ribbed knit, both from my local fabric store.  And the bright floral woven and gray owls knit fabric is from Art Gallery.  The wise owls on seemed appropriate for back to school.

and, the fluffy fleece vest is REVERSIBLE!  with a button closure on both sides.

Poolside Fun in a Towel Coverup

SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE so it must be time for a Pool Side Beach Party blog tour hosted by Deb (Sprouting Jube Jube) and Ula (lulu & celeste).  My contribution is a swimsuit coverup made from a beach towel using the ModKid Hailey pattern.

www.From-a-Box.com Swim Cover Up 6

The beach towel is from Wal-mart and cost less than $5 and was just enough for a size 7 Hailey tunic length.  I pulled bright yellow woven fabric from my stash for the beach cover up ruffle on the bottom.  To finish the neckline and the sleeves, I used 1/2″ store bought binding.  The empire waist is gathered with 1″ elastic sewn down with 3  rows of stitching.

www.From-a-Box.com Swim Cover Upwww.From-a-Box.com Swim Cover Up 2www.From-a-Box.com Swim Cover Up 5www.From-a-Box.com Swim Cover Up 7

Because this swim cover up worked up so easy and looks so good, I went back and bought more terry cloth beach towels to sew up a few more coverups for my daughter’s swim friends.  So stayed tuned – more to come!

Sofilantjes 2nd Anniversary Celebration!

Have you been following the anniversary celebration at Sofilantjes?  It’s the designer’s 2nd Anniversary, and it’s been a spectacular blog tour and week of games, pattern discounts (25% off your purchase (bundles excluded) with code CELEBRATE), give aways, & so much inspiration to create.  Her sponsors for the celebration are some of the best in the business – much THANKS to them for making this possible.

For the blog tour, Anne challenged her bloggers to mash, twist, extend, and transform her patterns.  She told us to use any of her patterns, even several of her patterns at once, to make our most creative garment possible… and we DID deliver!

These are the highlights and my personal FAVEs…

Pockets! Pockets! and more Pockets!

There were extra pockets, cargo pockets, inseam pockets, and kangaroo pockets shared on the tour.

For me, one of the most UNIQUE transformations for the newest pattern, the Solis Tunic and Dress is Braided Straps… I am trying this trick, for sure!

Paisley RootsSprouting Jube Jube

Another unique mash up on Sofilantjes Patterns that I have to guess surprised Anne, was the SWIMSUIT made from the Solis pattern and the free Liv Skirt pattern – so much creativity!

And then of course there were gorgeous dresses for the girlies!  with super twirly skirts, longer tunic styles, and even a super sweet peplum skirt.

Paired with the most popular Domi pants pattern, there were tutorials to mash up patterns into a ROMPER – yes! a romper.

Pocket Pants in Goats

HAPPY 2 Year ANNIVERSARY Sofilantjes!  It’s been an exciting year full of patterns, tutorials, mash-ups, hacks, and such creativeness!  I am happy to be part of the anniversary blog tour.  To celebrate the anniversary, I pulled my FAVORITE goat fabric and made a capri Domi pants with plenty of pockets for my girl.  I LOVE this fabric!  almost as much as I LOVE the Sofilantjes Domi Pants Pattern.  And then with the extra pockets… ok, yes, that’s enough gushing – let’s get to the good stuff.

The Domi Pants Pattern come with options for front pockets.  I added back and side pockets to my capri pants.  The side pockets include a velco tab closure.

Here are pictures of the simple steps to add these pockets.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab

It’s a PJ Party!

{Pajamas in the Laboratory}

What’s the perfect (and possibly the only) garment to sew for a preteen boy that he will actually wear???  PAJAMAS shorts!  especially pajamas shorts in awesome fabrics.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 5

For my stop on the Spring Break Pajamas Party Blog Tour, I wanted to sew for my son.  He is 11 years old, and doesn’t get many opportunities to model handmade clothes sewn by his Mom.  The PJ’s party was the perfect opportunity.

But then the Sew Your Stash Challenge for March was added.  The theme this month is ‘Dolls, Plushies, and Toys’.  eek… now what?  How do I make PJs for my preteen son having to do with toys???  AND use fabric and patterns from my stash?  I came up with the pajamas shorts with a science laboratory twist.  And I think if you stretch you imagination with me, I met the challenge 🙂

This is Pajamas in the Laboratory!

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 10

I used my favorite pajamas pants pattern, Simplicity 1605.  I made boys size Large, but only used a 1/4″ seam allowance because he is between the boys and the mens sizes.  Instead of a casing for the elastic, I used my serger to overlock stitch the elastic to the top of the shorts, and then folded over and used my sewing machine with a narrow zigzag.  This makes a nice waistband that doesn’t roll or shift.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 9

From my stash, I had this Micheal Miller Science Fair fabric collection.  It was planned to be PJ’s or maybe a blanket/quilt or maybe bags someday.  It was always intended to be for my son.  Now I know that I bought it for this Pajamas Party Blog Tour!  It fit the theme of ‘toys’ for an 11 year old boy.  And since growing 2 inches and gaining 8 pounds in the last 3 months, he needed new PJ shorts. I made a pair of shorts from each of the 3 fabrics in my stash, and top stitched in coordinating threads.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab

BUT my favorite part of this project, was the photo shoot… creating the scenes of science with his toys was a lot of fun!

This is the molecule fabric, so he works with his microscope and looks up information on his computer.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 23

This is the chemistry fabric, so he mixes his solutions to make slime, smoke, and bubbling goo, while wearing safety goggles of course.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 21

This is the physics fabric, so he builds his Legos – and the Newton Apple was a last minute add from his Dad.

www.From-a-Box.com PJ Party Lab 22

My son’s favorite moment was when Zazzles the cat made the photo shoot too.

A Pot of Gold at the End of a Rainbow

{For the Love of Legends Blog Tour, hosted by CraftingCon and Phat Quarters}
For the Love of Legends Blog Tour hosted by CraftingCon and Phat Quarters

Read along for the blog lineup & prize package give-aways… enjoy!

Featuring the Jezebelle apron PDF pattern designed by Handmaiden’s Cottage Patterns to share the famous legend of A Pot of Gold at the End of a Rainbow.

www.From-a-Box.com Rainbow Apron 1

www.From-a-Box.com Rainbow Apronwww.From-a-Box.com Rainbow Apron

The legend has many interpretations.  The most famous is the Irish story of Leprechauns leaving pots of gold at the end of rainbows.  Or something about fairies leaving the gold to be guarded by Leprechauns.  And sometimes there is an old farmer and his wife involved in the myth.  I think the point of the legend is mostly the same… Because a rainbow is a circle arcing across the sky, and you can only see a portion of it, the end of the rainbow does not really exist, so the pot of gold is never attainable – meaning that you can keep following that rainbow looking the reward of a pot of gold, but you will not get there to find it.  (geez, that sounds kinda pathetic now that I type it out…)

Let’s try another interpretation… Some versions of the A Pot of Gold at the End of a Rainbow legend take a spiritual theme.  Such as, if you chase a rainbow only expecting to find a pot of gold at the end, you will be disappointed.  In other words, enjoy the journey.  I guess if you are traveling a rainbow, that’s a reward already.

www.From-a-Box.com Rainbow Apron

Because it is St. Patrick’s Day this week, I chose the A Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow legend to contribute to the For the Love of Legends Blog Tour hosted by CraftingCon and Phat Quarters.

For the pot of gold, I needed a gold fabric pocket. I re-purposed a dance costume to get the gold fabric. The rainbow needed to arc across the garment to end in the pot of gold, or the pocket in this case.  I pulled one of my favorite patterns for adapting a theme to a wearable garment.  It’s a flirty apron pattern called the Jezebelle Apron by Handmaiden’s Cottage Patterns.  (I featured the same apron for The Day of the Dead Celebration HERE and again HERE)

www.From-a-Box.com Rainbow Apron

The apron pattern is completely reversible, although that is not needed for my adaption today.  The pocket is gathered and rounded, and looks perfectly like a pot of gold.

The rainbow, however, was a bit of a struggle.  The apron bodice is fitted with princess seams to make it so flirty.  My vision was to have a quarter of the rainbow arc across the right side into the pocket on the left side skirt.  Getting the curved shape of the arc across the fitted bodice was challenging to say the least.  This project spent many nights in time out when I just couldn’t look at anymore. — ever have a project that just needs to sit in the corner until you can work with it again.  Finally, I found this rainbow ribbon in my collection, and borrowing a ‘mannequin with boobs’ from my friend, I was able to achieve the arc that I wanted.  Then I just stitched 5 rows of ribbon following the arc with gold metallic top stitching, and I had my rainbow!

www.From-a-Box.com Rainbow Apron

www.From-a-Box.com Rainbow Apron

And I have to say, I am very happy with the results!  I managed to represent a favorite legend in a wearable garment! Not to sound too trite or too cheesy – I followed the rainbow long enough and found a pot of gold.

Petit Oiseau Blog Tour

My girl’s newest outfit is quite unique… it is a Filles a Maman pattern with an AWESOME ruffle that stretches from shoulder to wrist across the shirt.  And because ruffles are so awesome, I added the same ruffle piece from the pattern to the pants.  I will admit, I think myself pretty clever to have re-used the awesome ruffle from the pattern on the pants too.

www.From-a-Box.com Petit Oiseau

This is the Petit Oiseau shirt, designed by Filles a Maman, and available HERE (on sale too!).  It is a dolman style shirt in knit fabrics available for sizes 12m-14y.  It can be made in short sleeves or long sleeves.  And with or without the asymmetrical ruffle.  All versions are kinda funky & quite lovely at the same time.  Very modern.

I made the long sleeve version in a heavier gray knit fabric quilted with hearts and the top of the right sleeve and ruffle in a pink knit fabric.  I added 1″ to the shirt length to cover my tall girlie.

www.From-a-Box.com Petit Oiseau

Then I made pants to match… I used my handy leggings pattern but cut at the waistband and pieced another asymmetrical ruffle in there.  It is the same ruffle from the Petit Oiseau shirt pattern but with both ends finished.  I simply started the ruffle a bit off center in the front and wrapped it around.  It must have been meant-to-be because the ruffle length fit perfectly!
