School Spirit Wear Refashion

{A New Look Blog Tour hosted by Gracious Threads}

How exciting?!  One of my favorite pattern designers & bloggers is celebrating her NEW LOOK with a Blog Tour!  To help Jess at Gracious Threads celebrate, I created a New Look of my own by refashioning a school spirit t-shirt into a twirly dress for my daughter.  I used the Gracious Threads Petra Pattern – which happens to be on sale this week HERE, use code: ANEWLOOK – and a too small, hand me down, t-shirt given to us by my friend Kristin.  My kindergartener loves her custom designed spirit wear!  She is ready to show it off at school tomorrow.

But first, I will show off my school spirit wear refashion to you…

I am going to show the resulting new look today, and then on Thursday I am going to show you HOW TO CREATE A NEW LOOK by refashioning a spirit t-shirt.  I made sure to take pictures while building this dress to show you how easy it is to adapt a favorite pattern to reuse and repurpose a t-shirt.   Simply by blocking the t-shirt design, the good part of the t-shirt gets reused as the focal point in the new garment.

The Petra Pattern from Gracious Threads has a shirt option and the twirly dress option.  I have made the shirt before HERE – and I love the design because of the slightly gathered sleeves.  For the dress option, the bodice is cut at empire waist and attached to a 6 panel skirt.  The skirt is designed to end at the knee, but for this refashioned t-shirt, I wanted it to end much shorter to be worn with leggings – kindergarteners need to wear clothes for ready for play.

And to prove how twirly the Petra Dress Pattern by Gracious Threads turns out, my daughter tested on the playground.

To complete the refashion, I used Riley Blake knit fabric in red on the blocked bodice and skirt panels.  I used a black and white striped fabric from my stash closet – origins unknown.  The striped fabric is a super stretchy 4 way stretch material, so I was able to use the stripes both vertical on the sleeves and horizontal on the back.  I stitched most of the dress on my serger.  The top-stitching around the sleeve hem and the neck binding was stitched on my sewing machine with a double needle.  The dress hem was stitched on my serger with a rolled hem.

Summer Tops for Girls & Boys

{Traveller Tee & Seashore Top by Gracious Threads}

After sewing up kids’ shorts on the Canadian Pattern Designer Blog Tour (see HERE), the girl & boy needed summer tops to match the summer shorts.  I went looking for patterns by a Canadian Designer to stick with the theme (i love to be inspired by a theme), patterns that were casual and comfy for frequent summertime wearing, and patterns that were new to me.  The Gracious Threads patterns fit the qualifications!  It was the Traveller Tee for the boy, and the Seashore Top for the girl!

He only wants to wear those long & baggy gym shorts in the brightest colors ever.  Every day to school, he is in those shorts.  My friend tells me to be happy, cause at least they are clean shorts.  Well now, my son has khaki Everest Pants to wear in the rotation of lime green, road cone orange, and white shiny gym shorts.

Just in time for Back to School sewing…

Jess at Gracious Threads introduced her latest pattern the Raindrop Tee!  And I was a lucky pattern tester, or was my daughter lucky for scoring a cool tee perfect for the fall season – I think we were both lucky! (you can be a lucky winner of the pattern… see below)
