Back To School 2017

My FAVORITE day of the year, Back to School!  This year, I participated in the Back To School blog tour with so many fabulous sewing ladies.  After you check out my daughter’s back to school look, make sure to see the other blog tour outfits – schedule and links are below.

For my Back to School look, I used Gracious Threads patterns.  The top is the Raindrop Tee, the pants are Lazy Days Lounge Pants, and the vest is Glacier Vest.  The fabrics are white soft fuzzy fleece and raspberry ribbed knit, both from my local fabric store.  And the bright floral woven and gray owls knit fabric is from Art Gallery.  The wise owls on seemed appropriate for back to school.

and, the fluffy fleece vest is REVERSIBLE!  with a button closure on both sides.

Pocket Pants in Goats

HAPPY 2 Year ANNIVERSARY Sofilantjes!  It’s been an exciting year full of patterns, tutorials, mash-ups, hacks, and such creativeness!  I am happy to be part of the anniversary blog tour.  To celebrate the anniversary, I pulled my FAVORITE goat fabric and made a capri Domi pants with plenty of pockets for my girl.  I LOVE this fabric!  almost as much as I LOVE the Sofilantjes Domi Pants Pattern.  And then with the extra pockets… ok, yes, that’s enough gushing – let’s get to the good stuff.

The Domi Pants Pattern come with options for front pockets.  I added back and side pockets to my capri pants.  The side pockets include a velco tab closure.

Here are pictures of the simple steps to add these pockets.

Summer Solis Dress

The latest design from Sofilantjes is the Solis Dress, and it is PERFECT for summer weather.  The PDF Pattern makes a knit fabric dress (or tunic) with a racerback tank top.  It is a very unique design!  And it is easy to make if you have experience with knit fabrics – if you dont, then just take your time, and ask for help HERE.

www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress

www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress 7

The skirt can be made with pleats or as a full circle.  Just so you know, the full skirt version makes a super twirl skirt!  It can be a dress or a tunic.  And it has inseam POCKETS.  I think every garment should have pockets!

www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress

The Solis pattern is offered in sizes 12 months to 14 years.

I made a size 6 pleated dress for my girl.  It is very fitted, and fit her perfectly.  I suggest measuring your girl to get the fit right.  And be careful sizing up too much because the cut of this top needs to fit.  As with all Sofilantjes patterns, the measurements are spot on.

Another suggestion is to use knit fabric that is less than 50% stretch – really you should use about 30% stretch.  This is because of the fit and underarm cut.  You dont want this saggy.  So pick a sturdy knit fabric.  I used a tight cotton/spandex flowered knit and a cotton pink knit purchased from Jo-ann.  The pattern has the option of adding clear elastic to the neckline.  I didnt have any, and am not particularly skilled at using clear elastic, so I omitted it.  And since my outer knit fabric had good recovery to it, I didnt need it.

www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress 2www.From-a-Box.com Sofilantjes Solis Dress

The pattern meets the typical high quality expected from Sofilantjes – see my other garments HERE, HERE, and HERE.  There are line drawings, printing in layers, clear & concise instructions, measurements and fabric charts, a summary of steps at the end, and TONS of example photos from her testers.

The Solis Pattern is on sale for only 2 days… and make sure you join the Sofilantjes Sew and Show FB group to meet other Sofilantjes fans.

Cowl Neck Top for a Teen

{Hibernis | Pattern by Sofilantjes}

Want to sew for a teenager?  But don’t know what to sew for a teen girl?  My teenage niece is lovin’ the Hibernis Cowl Neck Top!  It has a flattering fit that looks stylish.  She even said it is her favorite of all the tops I have made her – yes, that makes this Aunt feel really good 🙂

www.From-a-Box.com Hibernis Cowl Top for teen 24

The Hibernis Cowl Neck Top PDF Pattern is just released by Sofilantjes Patterns.  You can check out all the testers version HERE.  And of course it is offered at a special price HERE – but act fast, it’s a limited offer.

www.From-a-Box.com Hibernis Cowl Top for teen 26

Sofilantjes provided the test pattern to me, and I stitched up a size 13 for my niece with short sleeves, princess seams, and side pockets.  Because she is tall and thin, I slimmed down the top front and back sides to a size 12, just to keep it fitted on her.  The pattern is supposed to fit slim, and not super bulky around the middle – this stylish feature is consistent throughout the Sofilantjes Patterns.

My niece modeled it for me this morning, and then wore it to school…

www.From-a-Box.com Hibernis Cowl Top for teen 22

The most unique feature of this new Sofilantjes Pattern is the removable cowl or scarf around the neckline.  It is secured with two buttoned or snapped flaps on the shoulders.

www.From-a-Box.com Hibernis Cowl Top for teen 7www.From-a-Box.com Hibernis Cowl Top for teen 23

I used a multi-color zigzag patterned knit for the front and back and cowl, a black knit for the sides and sleeves, and a magenta knit for the side pockets.  The neckband, waistband, and pocket trim is a ribbed black knit.  All fabrics are from Jo-anns.  I used my serger to piece the top together and a double-needle on my sewing machine for top stitching and hemming.

www.From-a-Box.com Hibernis Cowl Top for teen 28www.From-a-Box.com Hibernis Cowl Top for teen 12www.From-a-Box.com Hibernis Cowl Top for teen 25

The Sofilantjes Pattern is for intermediate seamstresses – in my opinion.  While working with knit fabrics is not difficult, the amount of pieces and the placement of the side pockets does take some patience.  But, the pattern instructions will help you make this top for your girlie.  And the Sofilantjes Sew & Show Facebook Group is super helpful if needed.

The Cowl Neck Shirt Pattern comes in sizes 12m to 14.  The pattern contains: Instructions with both pictures and graphics (+ VIDEO LINK!), a summary in writing and a summary in graphics, A4 and leter size trimless pattern pieces and a A0 file.  The instructions are complete and easy to follow.  Yes, I am a Sofilantjes fan-girl – but with good reason, her patterns are very well done.

www.From-a-Box.com Petit Oiseau Blog Tour

Petit Oiseau Blog Tour

My girl’s newest outfit is quite unique… it is a Filles a Maman pattern with an AWESOME ruffle that stretches from shoulder to wrist across the shirt.  And because ruffles are so awesome, I added the same ruffle piece from the pattern to the pants.  I will admit, I think myself pretty clever to have re-used the awesome ruffle from the pattern on the pants too.

www.From-a-Box.com Petit Oiseau

This is the Petit Oiseau shirt, designed by Filles a Maman, and available HERE (on sale too!).  It is a dolman style shirt in knit fabrics available for sizes 12m-14y.  It can be made in short sleeves or long sleeves.  And with or without the asymmetrical ruffle.  All versions are kinda funky & quite lovely at the same time.  Very modern.

I made the long sleeve version in a heavier gray knit fabric quilted with hearts and the top of the right sleeve and ruffle in a pink knit fabric.  I added 1″ to the shirt length to cover my tall girlie.

www.From-a-Box.com Petit Oiseau

Then I made pants to match… I used my handy leggings pattern but cut at the waistband and pieced another asymmetrical ruffle in there.  It is the same ruffle from the Petit Oiseau shirt pattern but with both ends finished.  I simply started the ruffle a bit off center in the front and wrapped it around.  It must have been meant-to-be because the ruffle length fit perfectly!

ADVTee Pattern Tour

{Pattern by Sofilantjes… Tour hosted by Sprouting Jube Jube}

This is an ADVTee shirt for my 6 year old daughter.  The pattern is new from Sofilantjes Patterns.  And naturally, I paired the t-shirt with a Liv skirt – a FREE pattern from Sofilantjes.  And keep reading for a discount offer…

www.From-a-Box.com ADVTee Pattern Tour 2

The pattern released last month and I was eager to stitch one up for my girlie.  All of Anne’s patterns are really good!  The pattern pieces are simple to cut, include direction of stretch, print as layers, and line up perfectly.  The instructions are clearly written with plenty of drawings.  And my fave, a summary of steps at the end of the pattern for when this pattern is added to your regular rotation.

The shirt is knit fabrics with a ribbed neckband.  All of the fabrics are from my local Joann’s store.  The pattern can be made in a couple of different options with either long or short sleeves.  I choose to make elbow length sleeves because these are the most suitable length for a kindergartener – warmer than short sleeves but still short enough to stay out of paint and lunch 🙂

www.From-a-Box.com ADVTee Pattern Tour

www.From-a-Box.com ADVTee Pattern Tour

The pattern comes in sizes 12 months to 14 years – huge range of sizes!  and it is unisex to be sewn for boys or girls.

The shirt is a comfy knit t-shirt with flat v-neck or a crossover v-neck.  I made the crossover v-neck with velcro tabs to hold the yoke in place.  And there is even a little pocket that you can choose to put on the front of the t-shirt.

www.From-a-Box.com ADVTee Pattern Tour

To make a complete outfit, I made a matching Liv skirt with the round front pockets and yoga style waist band.  Like most current pattern designers, Anne offers a FREE pattern so you can try out her designs.  Then, once you see how her patterns are written and see how her designs stitch together, you will look forward to getting her other patterns.  While I have worked with Sofilantjes Patterns for a couple of years now – see HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE – and continue to look forward to her new patterns, I hope you will try out the ADVTee Pattern or any of her others.

For the Pattern Tour, Anne is offering a 20% off discount with the code “CELEBRATE”… Bundles are excluded from this promotion and the code will be valid from November 30th to December 6th.  You can shop HERE.

Many bloggers are here this week to introduce you to the new ADVTee Pattern.  All of the sneak peeks so far have been amazing!  I hope you will enjoying seeing all of the versions.

School Spirit Wear Refashion

{A New Look Blog Tour hosted by Gracious Threads}

How exciting?!  One of my favorite pattern designers & bloggers is celebrating her NEW LOOK with a Blog Tour!  To help Jess at Gracious Threads celebrate, I created a New Look of my own by refashioning a school spirit t-shirt into a twirly dress for my daughter.  I used the Gracious Threads Petra Pattern – which happens to be on sale this week HERE, use code: ANEWLOOK – and a too small, hand me down, t-shirt given to us by my friend Kristin.  My kindergartener loves her custom designed spirit wear!  She is ready to show it off at school tomorrow.

But first, I will show off my school spirit wear refashion to you…

www.From-a-Box.com A New Look Blog Tour: School Spirit Wear Refashion

I am going to show the resulting new look today, and then on Thursday I am going to show you HOW TO CREATE A NEW LOOK by refashioning a spirit t-shirt.  I made sure to take pictures while building this dress to show you how easy it is to adapt a favorite pattern to reuse and repurpose a t-shirt.   Simply by blocking the t-shirt design, the good part of the t-shirt gets reused as the focal point in the new garment.

www.From-a-Box.com A New Look Blog Tour: School Spirit Wear Refashion

www.From-a-Box.com A New Look Blog Tour: School Spirit Wear Refashion

www.From-a-Box.com A New Look Blog Tour: School Spirit Wear Refashion

The Petra Pattern from Gracious Threads has a shirt option and the twirly dress option.  I have made the shirt before HERE – and I love the design because of the slightly gathered sleeves.  For the dress option, the bodice is cut at empire waist and attached to a 6 panel skirt.  The skirt is designed to end at the knee, but for this refashioned t-shirt, I wanted it to end much shorter to be worn with leggings – kindergarteners need to wear clothes for ready for play.

www.From-a-Box.com A New Look Blog Tour: School Spirit Wear Refashion

And to prove how twirly the Petra Dress Pattern by Gracious Threads turns out, my daughter tested on the playground.

www.From-a-Box.com A New Look Blog Tour: School Spirit Wear Refashion

To complete the refashion, I used Riley Blake knit fabric in red on the blocked bodice and skirt panels.  I used a black and white striped fabric from my stash closet – origins unknown.  The striped fabric is a super stretchy 4 way stretch material, so I was able to use the stripes both vertical on the sleeves and horizontal on the back.  I stitched most of the dress on my serger.  The top-stitching around the sleeve hem and the neck binding was stitched on my sewing machine with a double needle.  The dress hem was stitched on my serger with a rolled hem.

There are plenty more NEW LOOKS this week to celebrate with Jess at Gracious Threads.  I hope you will visit the other blogs that are participating, and shop the new Gracious Threads site HERE – remember to use the discount code ANEWLOOK all week.
