Pocket Pants in Goats

HAPPY 2 Year ANNIVERSARY Sofilantjes!  It’s been an exciting year full of patterns, tutorials, mash-ups, hacks, and such creativeness!  I am happy to be part of the anniversary blog tour.  To celebrate the anniversary, I pulled my FAVORITE goat fabric and made a capri Domi pants with plenty of pockets for my girl.  I LOVE this fabric!  almost as much as I LOVE the Sofilantjes Domi Pants Pattern.  And then with the extra pockets… ok, yes, that’s enough gushing – let’s get to the good stuff.

The Domi Pants Pattern come with options for front pockets.  I added back and side pockets to my capri pants.  The side pockets include a velco tab closure.

Here are pictures of the simple steps to add these pockets.

The matching top is from the Solis Dress Pattern, but only the bodice pieces with an additional 5″ of length to make it into a tank top.  And the cute goat is proudly displayed on the back.

ADVTee Pattern Tour

{Pattern by Sofilantjes… Tour hosted by Sprouting Jube Jube}

This is an ADVTee shirt for my 6 year old daughter.  The pattern is new from Sofilantjes Patterns.  And naturally, I paired the t-shirt with a Liv skirt – a FREE pattern from Sofilantjes.  And keep reading for a discount offer…

www.From-a-Box.com ADVTee Pattern Tour 2

The pattern released last month and I was eager to stitch one up for my girlie.  All of Anne’s patterns are really good!  The pattern pieces are simple to cut, include direction of stretch, print as layers, and line up perfectly.  The instructions are clearly written with plenty of drawings.  And my fave, a summary of steps at the end of the pattern for when this pattern is added to your regular rotation.

The shirt is knit fabrics with a ribbed neckband.  All of the fabrics are from my local Joann’s store.  The pattern can be made in a couple of different options with either long or short sleeves.  I choose to make elbow length sleeves because these are the most suitable length for a kindergartener – warmer than short sleeves but still short enough to stay out of paint and lunch 🙂

The pattern comes in sizes 12 months to 14 years – huge range of sizes!  and it is unisex to be sewn for boys or girls.

The shirt is a comfy knit t-shirt with flat v-neck or a crossover v-neck.  I made the crossover v-neck with velcro tabs to hold the yoke in place.  And there is even a little pocket that you can choose to put on the front of the t-shirt.

www.From-a-Box.com ADVTee Pattern Tour

To make a complete outfit, I made a matching Liv skirt with the round front pockets and yoga style waist band.  Like most current pattern designers, Anne offers a FREE pattern so you can try out her designs.  Then, once you see how her patterns are written and see how her designs stitch together, you will look forward to getting her other patterns.  While I have worked with Sofilantjes Patterns for a couple of years now – see HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE – and continue to look forward to her new patterns, I hope you will try out the ADVTee Pattern or any of her others.

For the Pattern Tour, Anne is offering a 20% off discount with the code “CELEBRATE”… Bundles are excluded from this promotion and the code will be valid from November 30th to December 6th.  You can shop HERE.

Many bloggers are here this week to introduce you to the new ADVTee Pattern.  All of the sneak peeks so far have been amazing!  I hope you will enjoying seeing all of the versions.

Back to School Zipper Pouch

{S is for Sewing e-book, featuring the Milk Money Pouch}

I’m back with another goodie from the Sewing With Boys latest e-book.  This is a zippered pouch perfect for those boys to carry their milk money to school.  Or it could be used to carry notes for the teachers, or little erasers, or a pencil sharpener, or a bike lock key — so many options.  And you know how much the kids like a little pouch to carry their specials.  The pouch is sized 3″ by 4″, but can be made in any size really.  And is a super quick sew!  So quick, I timed myself making 5 pouches for all the little guys.

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

The S is for Sewing e-book is available now HERE.  It features 4 full patterns (see the Quad T-Shirts for my little cousin HERE), plus plenty of extras.  One of the extras is the Milk Money Pouch.  It is a fully lined zippered pouch with options to customize with coordinating ribbons, bias, and multiple fabrics.  I followed the pattern instructions exactly and found them to be easy to follow such that I completed 5 pouches (except for stitching closed the inside bottom, because I forgot about that step) in less than 2 hours.

Working with a variety of fabrics sources, including my scrap drawer, a charm pack, and my overflowing stash closet, I selected coordinating fabrics for the 5 pouches.

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

Milk Money Pouch #1 is from a charm pack that hasn’t made it to a quilt yet.  The zipper matched perfectly – it was meant to be.  While the charm pack size is larger than the pattern specified, it still worked just fine.  As long as you cut the 2 outside pieces and the 2 inside pieces the same size, you can make any size pouch following the pattern instructions.

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

Next is a Milk Money Pouch is in scraps from my little cousin’s romper made last year.  Those cute frogs, monkeys, and puppies are adorable.  This little zippered pouch will be sent to him.

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

It’s a Milk Money Pouch.  Or to my son, it’s a lunch money pouch to carry the check that we still write to fill his account for the lunch line.  He is going to be in the 5th grade.  Nothing says 5th grade boy better than chicken wings and Ritz crackers.  So this is his zippered pouch.

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

The Milk Money Pouch pattern is from the creative team at Sewing With Boys, so I wanted to keep with the boy theme.  That means the next Milk Money Pouch is baseball!

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

Taking clues from the Back to School e-book, I present the 5th Milk Money Pouch in  science fabrics inspired by a bright kid at the dance studio who likes all things science.

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

Now… I am ready to cut the pieces for the pouches.  I completed in 31 minutes!  Yes, 5 zippered pouches cut in 31 minutes – including having to move the cat at least 3x off the fabric.

For me, the most time consuming step making a zippered pouch (or a zippered anything for that matter) is installing the zipper.  My “Make It Easy” trick for installing a zipper is Wonder Tape.  I used to keep an emergency pacifier hidden in the cabinet when my kiddos were babies… now I keep an emergency roll of Wonder Tape.  I don’t ever want to run out of this stuff.  It makes sewing a zipper easy!!!

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

And to personalize the zippered pouches, I added my From-a-Box label to the lining fabric before assembling the edges.

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

So, how long did it take my to sew all 5 Milk Money Pouches???

www.From-a-Box.com Milk Money Pouch

In total, 2 hours of work for 5 cute and gift’able zippered pouches.  I think that is pretty good especially when you look at the results!!!  It’s a great pattern, and definitely a pattern that will be used again.  I have 5 girls that each want a zippered pouch too.

Summer Tops for Girls & Boys

{Traveller Tee & Seashore Top by Gracious Threads}

After sewing up kids’ shorts on the Canadian Pattern Designer Blog Tour (see HERE), the girl & boy needed summer tops to match the summer shorts.  I went looking for patterns by a Canadian Designer to stick with the theme (i love to be inspired by a theme), patterns that were casual and comfy for frequent summertime wearing, and patterns that were new to me.  The Gracious Threads patterns fit the qualifications!  It was the Traveller Tee for the boy, and the Seashore Top for the girl!

Climbing Pantaloons for Spring

It’s Spring time here in the Pacific Northwest, and that means cool mornings, warmer afternoons, and then cool nights – the capri length Tree Climbing Pantaloons in a small corduroy fabric are good for this season’s weather.  My girl can wear the shorter pants with long sleeve shirts or even layers so that she can be ready for play anytime.  She thinks the pants with their elastic waist and elastic cuffs are comfy.  I think these pants are easy to sew up.  And as the name suggests, these pants are ready for climbing, as she shows us on the school stairs.
