Halloween is only a few weeks away.  Make a Halloween Apron using fabrics from Whimsical Fabric online store.  Order today for this fabric bundle deal of Happy Haunting fabrics by Riley Blake.

To show off the Wacky Wednesday fabric bundle, I stitched up this reversible apron using the Happy Haunting fabric collection.  The collection includes novelty prints in the traditional Halloween colors of orange and black.  The reversible apron features the orange haunted houses, owls, witches, and moons print on one side, and the reverse side is a mix of stripes on the bodice and hexie print on the bottom.

This reversible apron pattern is one of my favorites – my serious favorite considering it is a frequently featured pattern on my blog – HERE, HERE, and HERE!  It’s the Jezebelle Reversible Apron PDF Pattern by Handmaiden’s Cottage.  It is a flirty full circle skirt on an hourglass shaped bodice.  For me, the apron is a canvas to show off lovely & fun fabrics.

This week’s bundle is Halloween Magic from Riley Blake stitched up in the Oliver + S Pinwheel Dress.  (offered HERE)  For my almost-7-year -old daughter this is a fun combo.  The pattern offers a slip dress and a tunic.  I made both so we have some layering options.

I love the swinging skirts that tuck up in the front.  And the bias trim detail – I am a sucker for anytime I can make my own bias trim.  In my world, the more fabric combos you can use the better!  Bias trim is another fabric to use, so YAY!

This is why I LOVE the bundle deals on Wednesdays… a perfect fabric combo!

Quilt Block Skirt: May Love for Mom

{Quilt Along at Whimsical Fabric}

This is something new for me… I made Quilt Blocks.  Following the May Quilt Blocks at Whimsical Fabric, I stitched up 5 Heart Quilt Blocks in some Riley Blake fabrics.  Then I pieces the blocks with a blue coordinate to make a border on a simple gathered skirt for my daughter.

www.From-a-Box.com May Quilt Along

Whimsical Fabric is hosting a Quilt Along this year.  They introduce a new quilt block every month with a complete tutorial to help you make your own blocks.  You can look them up HERE.

For May, the block was a heart to show LOVE for Mom.

(see more Heart Quilt Blocks in the Whimsical Fabric Facebook Group HERE)

Most often, I sew garments for my kids – usually my 6 year old daughter.  I feel rushed to make all the cute girl patterns out there while she is still willing to wear what I make.  I figure there is time later in my sewing hobby to make for me and to quilt.  So, most of my projects are girlie clothes.  But, after working some heavy hours at my day job over the past few weeks, I wanted a different project that didn’t require me to figure out too much and that I could finish quickly to feel the rush of something done.  The Whimsical Fabric’s Quilt Along was perfect!  (remember, I told you the tutorial tells you exactly what to cut, and how to stitch it… simple)

After I made my 5 quilt blocks, now what???

Well…. I guess I returned to my comfort zone and put them on a quick skirt.

Little Gypsy Queen Dress for Spring

This dress is ready for Spring Twirling!

I made this dress with a full circle patchwork skirt, gathered neckline, and back bow from the PDF Pattern designed by Handmaiden’s Cottage.  It’s the Little Gypsy Queen pattern.

www.From-a-Box.com Vintage Sleep Gypsy 4

The fabric is the Dreamin’ Vintage collection by Art Gallery from Whimsical Fabric online shop.  It was their Wacky Wednesday deal in March… Join the group HERE to get the deals and join the challenges.

The fabric is SO pretty!  I love the blues, yellows, and purples.  Making the dress, I was continually reminded of the beds sheets at my Granny’s house.  Then it made sense.  The fabric collection is a retro print inspired by those bed sheets that I remember.

www.From-a-Box.com Little Gypsy Queen Dress

The dress pattern features a patchwork skirt that makes a full circle skirt, and that means plenty of twirly fun for girlie.  The waist is wrapped in a band that ties at the back in a sweet bow.  The bodice and gathered neck is made in the prettiest blue fabric of the collection.  The bodice is fully lined in a cotton white fabric and finished at the arms and the waist.   The dress fits comfy with the easy elastic around the top and the adjustable waist.  The bottom of the dress is finished with a narrow hem below the knees.

Besides making this dress for Whimsical Fabrics Wacky Wednesday challenge, this dress was made as my first ever garment made just for sale.  I joined the Handmaiden’s Cottage Pattern Showcase Sale hosted by Landocolors on their Facebook Page HERE.  The showcase features pattern designs from Handmaiden’s Cottage patterns.  The garments for sale on the Facebook Page range from Women’s Skirts & Aprons to Doll Dresses, and of course includes little girls and big girls Dresses, Tops and Pants.  So many beautiful clothes!  in all the Handmaiden’s Cottage Patterns.

This was my first opportunity to try out selling online, and I am so thankful for the opportunity.   But alas, my dress did not sell.  To be honest, I am disappointed, but not surprised.  However, I feel challenged now, and think I will be looking further into the online market for handmade items.  I want to try it out more.

Here is one last look at my Little Gypsy Queen Dress for Spring…

Easter Dresses in Voile

Voile Fabric… wondering what it is?  wondering what to do with it?  wondering if you should try it?  or, maybe, you have tried it, you know what to do with it, and you are wondering what your next project with voile fabric should be.

I am here to share with you my project in voile fabric and to inspire you to make something in voile fabric of your own.

Using voile fabric and a PDF pattern from Whimsical Fabric online store, I made this darling dress for my 6 1/2 year old daughter.

This is her Easter dress.

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voilewww.From-a-Box.com Bateau Voile 8www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile

The voile fabric is Kladi Under Shadow from the Skopelos collection by Art Gallery – HERE in the Whimsical Fabric store.  The pettiskirt is Pure Elements in Fuschia also from Whimsical Fabric and cotton candy pink netting from my local shop.  The PDF Pattern is the Bateau Garden Dress designed by Winter Wear, yes, also available at Whimsical Fabric.

* the fabric was purchased by me with a discount, and the pattern was provided to me in exchange for the stitch up and the write up *

The BEST part of the project is the super-yummy voile fabric from Whimsical Fabric, and the oh-so-fluffy pettiskirt under the dress designed by Winter Wear Designs.

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile

So let’s talk about voile fabrics.

I don’t want to disappoint you, but other than the most luxurious, buttery-softest, and most lovely fabric you have ever worked with, sewing with voile is no different than sewing with good quilting cotton.  I suggest using a very sharp microtex needle, and setting your tension to work with lighter weight fabrics – but otherwise, I worked with voile fabric just like I work with other cottons.

The big difference is the wearability!  Just like flannel fabric is super cozy for pajamas or for blankets – voile is so-very comfortable for garments.  Especially for a draping shirt or a flowing skirt, and especially for this Easter Dress for my girl.  The soft circle skirt with the fluffy skirt underneath works perfectly in voile fabric.

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voilewww.From-a-Box.com Bateau Voile 3www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile

As for care of voile fabric- there are no special considerations.  I prewashed the fabric and lost little yardage due to shrinkage (remember, this is from Art Gallery, so it’s the good stuff).  I used my usual DRY & HOT setting on the iron.  I sprayed water for pressing and setting the seams.  At completion, I used Best Press spray.  After sewing, I washed and dried this dress, pressed it, and this is how it looks… pretty good, yes?!

www.From-a-Box.com Easter Dress in Voile 13

My daughter’s Easter dress is made from the Bateau Garden Dress PDF Pattern designed by Winter Wear Designs.  It is the scoop back dress cut at the size 7 vintage length with the tulle pettiskirt.  The pettiskirt is gathered tightly under the waist of the dress to add some poof.  Because the voile fabrics are softer and thiner than other cottons, the gathers make up beautifully!  Honestly, I think these are some of my most perfect gathers simply because the fabric is so supple.  The neckline is understitched and the circle skirt is hemmed with the 3/8″ bias made from the fuschia solid fabric.  The bodice is completely lined, and the skirt seams are finished with a serger.

Again, back to the fabrics… as I said these are Art Gallery fabrics and they are some of the very best on the market (imo)… Art Gallery doesn’t disappoint in the fabric prints, colors, quality, and styles.  And as you know, I shop Whimsical Fabric online store because of their selection, customer service, fair prices, and super-quick shipping — Go shopping HERE.

Summer Tops for Girls & Boys

{Traveller Tee & Seashore Top by Gracious Threads}

After sewing up kids’ shorts on the Canadian Pattern Designer Blog Tour (see HERE), the girl & boy needed summer tops to match the summer shorts.  I went looking for patterns by a Canadian Designer to stick with the theme (i love to be inspired by a theme), patterns that were casual and comfy for frequent summertime wearing, and patterns that were new to me.  The Gracious Threads patterns fit the qualifications!  It was the Traveller Tee for the boy, and the Seashore Top for the girl!
